I do a decent amount of brush playing on my cocktail drum, but not the side snare. A 10-12 inch drum is hard for me to keep sweeps consistent because there just isn't enough space on the head. I liked using a 14" snare for brush playing before I started using cocktail drums, so I am somewhat sp...

recording

I was very lucky to have a great engineer at the studio when those tunes were recorded. He really helped me to fine tune the cocktail drum itself. I had used several different ride cymbals in these recordings. A 20" scimitar, an 18" "A" zildjian crash/ride and an 18" beatbea...

sizzle

Another good method for a sizzle cymbal is to use light chain. You know the little ball chain that you pull to turn the cieling fan on? An 8 inch piece of that works great. I had a piece that I hung from the wingnut of the cymbal stand with a keyring.

Anytime I post a question here, at least one person and usually several offer some help. Thanks guys. I'm trying a few of those tips you dropped me. I tried putting my hihat and crash cymbal. directly in front of the cocktail set. Previously I just had the crash out in front, so I just swung it a li...

hi hats

After almost two years of playing my cocktail drum without hi hats, I finally used them at a gig this past weekend. I've been using closed hats on a tall stand stand for the last few weeks. Being too lazy to setup a remote hat stand at gigs I just open and close the hats with my right hand. Which br...

travler

I played one of the original rhythm travler kits with the shallow/larger diameter bass drum. It wasn't anything that bad, but the volume on the bass isn't enough to really let the rest of the band hear it you if you start to get loud. The toms sound much better mic'ed undernieth I think than they do...

i have seen this before

I saw one of those once. I was in Washington DC, the rockabilly band (who's name escapes me) that opened for the brian setzer orchestra had one of these. It had an interesting sound to it.

dw prices

I used to think the dw drums (as well as the club jordan cocktail set) were overpriced. Last friday I went to the local drum shop. They had a dw mini-pro set sitting on the floor, of course I had to try playing it and all I can say is wow. I have never played a set of drums with such a clean, clear ...

muffling pillow

I went to look at a dw set this past weekend. The bass drum had a small muffling pillow velcroed to the inside. Seems like a pretty easy way to keep the pillow in place. This got me thinking about trying some muffling on my cocktaiul drum (something I haven't messed with very much). I was thinking t...

more bottom end

I don't see a problem with turning the subkick to face up, but John has a good point about getting that thing close enough to your head without smashing it. Maybe a smaller version of it could be put together. I have seen sound engineers use a guitar amp to get similiar effect as the subkick. If I'm...

mini drum set

in my internet travels I found something interesting on DW's site. Some of you guys here may think this is cool (I know there's alot of "micro kit" fans here). DW mini-pro, here's the link on the same page as the DW cocktail drum... can you guess why I was at the site? http://www.dwdrums.c...

sorry

I'm sorry. As usual I wasn't paying attention. There must have been a good-looking chick in the room when I was reading... not much else could pull my attention away frim drums. To answer your question: Yes, I think the hardware is stable enough to use for a project drum. The coloring on the hardwar...

snares

I have to agree with the guys here. I own both drums and personally I prefer the pacific brand snare drum over the ddrum snare. The ddrum brand snare drum certainly has a cool look to it and its not a bad snare drum by any means. It comes with a nice rim mount and has a good strainer, but the basswo...

more stuff

Thanks for all the quick replies. Before I say anything else I need to mention to John that he's not the only fan of the danmar red ball. That's what I used before this new beater and I still use one on my hipgig set. The tama adjustable beater made a huge difference in the kick sound of my cocktail...

bass beaters and rims mounts

I was looking through some used hardware in a bucket at a local music store when I came across something interesting. Its a wood bass drum beater, the beater head's angle is adjustable so you can be certain that it is always hitting the drum head flat. Of course I bought it for my cocktail set and i...
