Re: Aquarian heads
zimbop, I have seen ads that say the Superkick II head comes in a 16" size, but I have never found a retailer who can get one - I think it was a misprint. The Performance II head has a built-in muffler ring and extra ply around the edge. I'm not sure if the entire head (center part) is one ply...

we'll get back on-topic, but first...I noticed zimbop says he rarely plays top head on 16x16. I also have similar 16x16 setup and do play the top head as a tom when it's in vertical position. And setup in traditional horizontal position I use the same tuning - it's great both ways. I use an aquaria...

I use a black evans hydraulic on the bottom and an Evans EC2 on top. The top rings too much so I have an e-ring on there too. I may actually try a hydraulic on top sometime too. I also wanted to try a Remo Ebony pinstripe on top which is a 2-ply with a built-in ring. Still looking for that thud I wa...

Hmmm....on the other hand, MY Iron Cobra has turned out to be my best pedal! LOL! To each their own, I guess! :D John I loved the iron cobra as a conventional pedal, but I just can't get mine adjusted right for a good feel swinging up, mostly because there really aren't any adjustments. And it was ...

My wife thinks I'm going through a mid-life crises. I told her at least drumming doesn't involved trading her in for a younger model. That went well.... LOL. Having played on school kits in high school and such, I bought my first drum set at 38. My dad took up stone carving in his mid life. ...

Heads are really not that expensive so I think you're right. Makes you wonder how much a drum maker actually saves by putting throw-away heads on there in the first place. Maybe they figure everyone has their own favorite models so putting heads on at all is mostly a waste because most people will j...

It's really all about what sounds good to YOU. Have fun and keep experimenting. I am still in search of that elusive perfect thud but it's coming slowly. The closest I've gotten to a wet sound is with a hydraulic head, but with a single-ply on top it still rings too much. I've tried e-rings but no o...

Dave Do you actually have the floor tom or just the hardware? If you have the drum, have you tried that either in vertical or horizontal position instead of the cocktail drum? If the shell, rims and heads are decent, you may get some very good results, tho different from the cocktail drum itself. I...
