Hi John
No, no built in snare - maybe someday I'll take the classic cocktail drum plunge! I know you do this and get amazing results.
For me for now, the main drum is still a kick and floor tommy top; and I mount a popcorn snare and small tom on it.

Re: 16x16 kick tuning
Hey guys @Ex Nihilo - I do have an impact pad in place and find that helps, definitely will extend the life of whatever batter head. And yes cotton balls can be nice for subtle muffling - I've used them in my cocktail drum. @John and Garvin It's great to hear from players who are using these sized b...

Re: some tuning happiness for a 24x14 cocktail!
From the gallery a few years ago - http://www.cocktaildrum.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=980&g2_serialNumber=1 main drum, tom, one of a couple different side snares, and hardware remain the same, but I change up cymbals and percussion as needed, and heads too as d...

some tuning happiness for a 24x14 cocktail!
Thought I would share some good news - My 24x14 cocktail drum is in a good place right now, tuning-wise. It's a maple drum I built, functioning as kick and tom. I have a clear pinstripe on bottom with click pad, small amount of additional weatherstripping inside at batter edge, and coated Evans G2 o...

16x16 kick tuning
Hi all I've been using my microkit more and more recently and am looking to beef up the kick sound. The kick drum is a Premier maple 16x16 tom with a homemade lift and traditional spurs - I play this kit seated with the kick positioned horizontally. I've got a very cool sound for this drum right now...

a diversion
hi all i've taken a slight turn since building my standup cocktail kit a few years ago. I've done some good gigging and recording with my cocktail and it's been inspiring... About a year ago I picked up a 16x16 Premier tom at a yard sale. $5 with one head, a shell crack, sans legs, and missing 1rim ...

HA! it's been over a decade since I tried my first 'cocktail kit' experiment and it was similar to this! Didn't work so well for me because the balance of the beater on the pedal was hard to adjust to and the beater surface to head is reduced at a steeper angle. If it's comfortable for you, I suppos...

hey zorf kinda. I've tried each of a fatcongas cajon, a remo midsized djembe, and a large doumbek upside down or horizontally. response was underwhelming, mostly because none of these have the fundamental potential to sound like a bass drum at any size. You may get ok results from a conga if you tun...

we'll get back on-topic, but first...I noticed zimbop says he rarely plays top head on 16x16. I also have similar 16x16 setup and do play the top head as a tom when it's in vertical position. And setup in traditional horizontal position I use the same tuning - it's great both ways. I use an aquarian...

looks and sounds wacky - congrats on completing the mystery project! A few questions: how's the stability on the pvc posts? Do either bend and sway when you play? Are you going to tuning from the snare, down (ie crank that snare up) or tune the toms up a bit? What's that hi-hat thingy? How does the ...

what a great idea - a single thin PVC post from a single sheet of plywood? Further rocking with the motion of a pedal attached. One clue I see is that the pedal is not inverted, so the other 2 drums must mount from that pedestal in some bizarre perpendicular Seussian way. looks like the Flatt might ...

ok, I understand. well, if you're comfortable calculating, measuring and drilling your shell, the challenge seems to be in accurately placing 8 lugs where you previously had 6. don't know if there would be a detriment to the basswood shell in strength or tone with the extra drilling. Thoughts from a...

Dave Do you actually have the floor tom or just the hardware? If you have the drum, have you tried that either in vertical or horizontal position instead of the cocktail drum? If the shell, rims and heads are decent, you may get some very good results, tho different from the cocktail drum itself. I'...

hey Mike my first pedal was a SpeedKing too and I played mostly heel down for the longest time. Now I use both up/down depending on the tone of the drum and the musical feel required. When I started playing cocktail I wasn't comfortable lifting my foot much as one would when using a heel-up techniqu...
