Re: Still enjoying a Cocktail now and then
I too use one of those little Pearl Firecrackers. They are awesome little drums, perfectly scaled for cocktail use. I rewrapped mine to match my set. I still have the stock heads and I also used it to replace the 8 inch snare that came with the set. I have converted that 8 incher to a tom. Most musi...

Re: Billy Blast Taxi Cab Cocktail + Mini Set
Whoa, what a pimp set! Themes and motifs generally look good on a cocktail set. Check out my Tiki Kit here.
Never seen concert toms on a cocktail kit and the rail mount is unusual. Very outstanding kit all the way around.

Very nice kit. RIMS mounts on a cocktail set are very upper end.

Re: My UltraPhonic Cocktail drum
OK, for some reason it appears a little pink in some of the photos. Maybe reflecting something in the room? Really great sound on the set on your blog. Nothing like putting your own set together. I kind of did that with mine. It's an HB kit and I removed the hideous wrap, put my own wrap and added s...

Re: My UltraPhonic Cocktail drum
Very nice! I'd like to see some photos. The champagne sparkle finish is terrific.
How do you like the internal fan snares? I thought they always sounded awful but maybe I never learned how to use them.

Re: Tiki Cocktail Set
Hi, Yes, beautiful kit. I like the modifications you made. Do you play open-handed? MM :) Yes, left hand hats and ride. I have a conventional drum set and I play this way as well. I have my ride cymbal on my left, so the snare, hats and ride are close together. My first drum instructor played open ...

Re: Need crash/ride, mini-hihat ideas
You're welcome. It's too bad there's no purpose made dwarf ride 16 inches and under. The very best dwarf ride I heard was a Zildjian K 15 inch top hat. It was made with some kind of fancying hammering technique and had a wild, burned look. Some kind of newer model. Man, that sounded so sweet as a ri...

Re: Need crash/ride, mini-hihat ideas
I really like my pair of Meinl Classics 10 inch hats and they are affordable. I got them new. I had been using a Sabian B8 14 inch bottom hihat (low-end model) for a ride but it was too clangy. I am now using a 16 inch Sabian XS20 (mid-level model) medium crash for a crash/ride and I love it. It is ...

Re: My "Faux-Cocktail Kit" Set Up
Cool setup! But I don't think this is faux cocktail. As long as you're playing standing and have a bass drum foot pedal, then it's cocktail. I see some people playing seated and to me, that's just a conventional drum set.

Re: Christmas gig
I will be playing a gig Thursday for a nonprofit's Christmas party with a guitar and bass, just classic rock stuff and Christmas tunes. The next week I will play at a Hanukkah party. I may use my traditional set for that, though. But a cocktail set has so much attitude!

Photos of cocktail gigs
Hi, I thought we could put up photos of our gigs here. Here is a recent gig I had at a coffeehouse with a pianist/vocalist and a violinist/mandolinist. I played the Tiki Cocktail kit and congas.

Re: Rim Click Ideas
I have struggled with rim clicks too. I do them on the upper (floor tom) side of the bass drum, which is 16 inches in diameter. True, having the stick on the top head does muffle the bass drum so I lift up the butt end of the stick to match the bass drum hits. Rim clicks on a big 16 inch drum sound ...
