J - I've tried several different Yamaha 10 and 12" snares on my Club Jordan using the YESS mount. The mount is compatible so the drums mount correctly. In fact, the drum you're talking about (SD-2240) is probably the perfect option to get a more versatile snare sound using the stock hardware on...

cg, i had the same issue when I got my Jordan kit. Had an unbelievable time getting a replacement head when I broke the one that was included. I ended up getting one through Yamaha on warranty... try emailing their customer support through the web site. They ended up sending me 3 or 4.

Robert, my kit is pretty versatile but I use brushes much of the time. Most of the gigs that get the Cocktail kit are fairly low-volume, and I have found that brushes sound awesome on the drum in that context. The style is swingy jazz and light blues with a guitar trio. I have a 12" side snare ...

Lake Mills and Milwaukee, WI - May 26, May 27, June 10, 2007

What better way to spend a holiday weekend than two Cocktail Drum gigs. For once, I can't wait to load in and out! It's a busy weekend and I get to leave the big, heavy kit at home. Hopefully I'll be bringing out the Club Jordans more often as summer gig season heats up. May 26, 2007 Danny Miller Ba...

tikifreak, I've tried out a few of the &cie Zildjians in the store and they are outstanding. Nice vintage vibe, and more consistently good than other Zs. The 19" Armand is a winner too.

Welcome, Govon... Glad you asked us! I'm always happy to talk about my cocktail kit. I gig with my CJ kit fairly often. Here are my thoughts... Govon Chogg wrote: First, transportability. Are there still special bags for the kit? I’m probably going to play sitting down, with a hit-hat and ride as we...

Glad to hear it, multiperc. How cool is it to be a musician with a kid who is into music, too? I'm looking forward to when my 2yo might be going down that road, too. My dad was & is a working musician for most of his living. He always supported my musical pursuts & misadventures as I was gro...

I'd have to do it just to see the looks on the faces of the old-timers in the blues band I'm playing with... Seriously, I'm thinking of going to a 2-pc setup with those guys for certain road trip gigs. I'll have to try the sub-bass with my 6.5" black beauty clone - the fattest sounding ...

John, you are right on about overtone vs. fundamental. It's so weird and frustrating trying to tune that top head as a tom, especially with the stock head. I've had a little more success with a coated Aquarian Focus-X with Power Dot, but the overtones are still pretty crazy. The Aquarian also reduce...

multiperc, ever seen this Yamaha "sub-bass" drum? http://www.yamaha-europe.com/picture_archiv/products/10_Musical_instruments/drums/drum_sets/drumsets/daxdad_medium_jpg.jpg I think that thing is 12x22 - it basically is a cocktail drum on its side with the appropriate hardware. Oh to have e...

Hey John, how has this experiment been working out for you? I've been thinking of following in your footsteps on this one, maybe picking up a bigger snare and bringing the Jordans to gigs that would (for drummers who haven't seen the light) call for a "bop kit". I'm curious how you're tuni...

Sitting vs. Standing

Thought I'd revisit this topic - after playing my cocktail kit standing for nearly a year, at least week's gig I tried it sitting down. The band I'm primarily using the kit with is doing soul jazz and some jazzy blues, and they were really missing the left foot hi-hat, so I agreed to give this a sho...

Grant, go to the "Your Cocktail Kit" forum and look for any posts by Peter Lau. You won't be disappointed! I think Peter's further outside the box than I imagined possible - his designs are amazingly creative.

multiperc, I've had that idea before. I envision using the cocktail kit as part of a larger percussion rig. Glad to hear it sounds cool in practice!

How did the audition go?
