Re: killer all-purpose cymbal

I forgot to mention: this cymbal sounds great with sticks, rods, and brushes, and it has the best-sounding crescendo using tympani mallets of any I have heard. I bought 2 of them for comparison, and ended up keeping the heavier one (1350 grams). I'm lovin' it!!

killer all-purpose cymbal

I recently purchased a new cymbal that has turned out to be so versatile that I have to post about it. I bought an 18" Zildjian K Dark Thin Crash to be used as the only cymbal (along with hi-hat) on a Mini-Cocktail kit I put together (more about the kit later). This cymbal comes in 16" - 2...

Re: My new to me Custom Peace Manhattan kit

Cool snakeskin! I would recommend not going too heavy on the 16" cymbal. I have used a Zildjian 16" Armand Thin Crash on my mini kit and find that it sounds remarkably similar to one of my 20" rides. That 16" weighs 950 grams. The lighter weight will give it a larger sound (lower...

Re: Dallas: Balcony Club

It's been awhile since I've posted, and our standing gig schedule has changed. The Hi-Lifers (Romantic Retro Lounge Music) are now playing the Balcony Club on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 9:30-12:30 (although sometimes on Wednesdays). The Balcony Club is attached to the historic Lakew...

Club Jordan leg/snare/tom/cymbal brackets

I have two brand new leg brackets for sale. These are the same as on the Yamaha Club Jordan Cocktail drum that hold the legs, snare, tom, and cymbal arm in place. I special ordered them from Guitar Center and ended up never using them. They are still in the Yamaha packaging, and complete with hardwa...

Re: Where can you find these cymbal arms?

Steve, The items in your picture are little metal rings with a setscrew in them. They slide onto the arm and can be tightened into place wherever you want them, and they hold the plastic sleeves that the felt and cymbal go onto. The Club Jordan arm comes with 3 of these rings, 3 plastic sleeves, and...

Re: Where can you find these cymbal arms?

The Yamaha Club Jordan cymbal arm is almost the same as the one pictured. It can be ordered from Guitar Center, but is not cheap.

yo murph

Yeah, The Hi-Lifers have been playing regularly, check the gig section of CDL: every other week at Balcony Club. Jenni and I have also started a new group, Swing Slaves, and we're going to play for swing dance classes and events. This will be some of the same material as Hi-Lifers, except no slow tu...

new gig schedule

After taking most of the hot summer off, the Hi-Lifers are back at the Balcony Club in Dallas. We now play every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The Balcony Club is in the historic Lakewood Theater, and was recently profiled in Esquire magazine as one of the "Top 100 Bars" in the ...

custom sidekick for sale - soon

murph, How you doin', bro? Did you guys have fun at The Continental Club in Austin? My guess is you did. I have been enjoying the CD I bought, and look forward to the next one coming out. I definitely want a copy of it. I see you're still trying to get rid of your Sidekick pedal. Somebody will take ...

Yes, my snare mounts to the main drum using a Yamaha tom holder. When I get around to getting some photos taken and loaded onto this site, you will see how I did it. The solution involves custom hardware I had built at a machine shop. The exact size and type of clamp I wanted was not available, so I...

YESS mount on snare

I don't have any pictures - yet. I plan to post pics of my entire kit, but have yet to get around to doing so. The Yamaha YESS mount requires only two drilled holes to install. The trick is to A) not put the holes too close to the upper hoop, and B) to drill them parallel to the bearing edge so the ...

The Straight 8's

I went to see The Straight 8's last night in Frisco (Dallas). Great high energy rockabilly with plenty of surf twang. Mostly original tunes (really good) and a few choice covers performed with enthusiasm by a trio of great players. The crowd was into it. Gotta give props to murph on the custom cockt...

Aquarian Performance II for 15" drum

I highly recommend you try the Aquarian Performance II head for your cocktail kick drum, regardless of its size. My drum is 16" x 16", but I bet it will sound great on a 14" or 15" drum as well. I also recommend the small 2.5" diameter Remo Falam Slam (or similar) impact pad...
