Cajon cocktail drum setup

I'm an old-school cocktail drummer. If I'm playing a kit standing up, that's a cocktail kit to me. I know the original cocktail drums were cleverly trying to fit a drum set into a tiny space in a cocktail lounge so a vertical orientation is definitely part of what makes something a cocktail drum. Ho...

Tama Cocktail Jam Mini

I bought a Tama Cocktail Jam Mini a couple months ago and I've just finished tricking it out with my preferred noisemaker accessories. I'm very impressed with both the quality and the flexibility of this thing. It can be set up for a standing player but can be easily changed to work for a sitting pl...

My Meinl cajon drum set

I'm still a dyed-in-the-wool cocktail drummer who prefers playing drums standing up. However, I'm also a committed minimalist who can't stand carrying anything extra. I'm also into playing at low volume to accompany acoustic, vocal-harmony-focused music. All that to say, I've stumbled onto the cajon...

Re: Meinl Bass/Snare Boxes

I just posted in Your Cocktail Kit on the new cajon drum sets I've discovered and this is in the same vein. There's a young woman that I found on YouTube who is doing crazy things with Meinl percussion stuff, making minimalist, unconventional sets that have a lot of the spirit of cocktail drumming, ...

Re: Starting a journey.

As a guitarist who has found a lot of joy in discovering cocktail drum kits, I gotta say I feel your urge to play standing up. I've never played either guitar or drums sitting down. It just doesn't feel right to me. Anyway, I just want to emphasize that the biggest thing for me in drumming standing ...

New minimalist drum set scene

I haven't visited the lounge in quite a while but I'm so glad to see that it's still around. I still have my cocktail set and my 'arena rock' stand-up kit but I've mostly been playing guitar the last few years. However, I've just stumbled on a whole new corner of the minimalist drumming world, the c...

The plot thickens! Trixon drums drama.

After my earlier post, I tried to return to the TrixonUSA website but instead stumbled onto the Trixondrums.de website (a website about the original German-made Trixon drums). It's a fascinating website with lots of cool old vintage photos, catalogs, and information about vintage Trixon drums. I cam...

Trixon is keeping the Peace Manhattan alive!

Wow. Has it really been 5 years since I visited this site? In my defense, I did switch from drums to rhythm guitar in my main band around that time. However, I continued to play drums for another band up until last year so I really don't have any excuse. I just wanted to let everybody know that I wa...

Re: My modified 'arena-rock' cocktail kit

Here are some shots showing my crash-ride cymbal and hi-hat holders. Same approach as on my micro kit, with bracing rods, shaft collars, and, for the hi-hats, a coupling nut joining the top part that holds the cymbals to the bottom part that clamps to the bass drum. The hi-hat holder tends to sway j...

My modified 'arena-rock' cocktail kit

I wanted to post some photos of the latest version of my 'arena-rock' outdoor, full-size, full-volume stand-up/cocktail drum set. I've already posted photos of this set but I realized that I didn't have to keep lugging a hi-hat stand and two cymbal stands if I made a few modifications. You'll notice...

Re: My new micro cocktail kit

I get a more powerful kick drum sound in the micro kit orientation with the kick drum facing the audience. When I use the vertical orientation, I have to mute the top head of the kick drum with a Sound-off mute pad to keep my snares from buzzing and that really lowers the volume. Also, I just like h...

Re: My new micro cocktail kit

Here are a couple of shots of my vertical-orientation version of the same kit. I stopped using the splash cymbal so the two versions would be exactly the same. My big-boy arena-rock kit is the same set-up as well (just bigger drums and cymbals) so I'm going for minimalism and consistency. ;^)

Re: My new micro cocktail kit

Here are some more photos of my new micro cocktail kit. These show the rods and bracing I use to hold my hi hats and crash/ride cymbal.

My new micro cocktail kit

I visited Keith Cronin's excellent microkit site (http://www.keithcronin.com/drumkits/microkit.html) and that got me thinking about reconfiguring my Cube cocktail kit as a more conventional micro kit. I posted photos on this site a while back showing how I used a 14 x 14 floor tom, a 10 x 8 tom, and...
