Thanks for the response! I figure about the same; the Trixon set appears to be of a slightly higher quality that some of the other Chinese-made kits. The German site you linked to would seem to confirm this (they show a little more close-up detail than the Jim Laab site). There's also a 30-second lo...

The current Trixon cocktail kits

Has anybody tried one of the cocktail kits currently being produced under the Trixon name by Jim Laab? They appear to be garden variety Chinese-made drums (but with birch shells rather than Lauan or some mystery wood). The configuration is what I'm looking for and the price is reasonable, but I'm wo...

How do you get a drummer off your front porch? -Pay him for the pizza. What's the difference between a drummer and a large pizza? -the pizza can feed a family of four. My favorite one of these isn't about drummers, but here it is: How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? -none, the...

If it is discontinued, most likely it's because it was too expensive for most people. I know that's why I never bought one. I work for a Yamaha dealer, so I could have gotten a very substantial discount but even with that it was more than I was willing to pay.

Head for Vespe cocktail drum

I know someone who has a Vespe cocktail drum. It has no head. It appears to be 14" (so I'm told; I haven't actually seen the drum) but a 14" head won't fit, not even the Aquarian Vintage heads that are supposed to accomodate oversize shells. Anyone else here have one of these? Is this usua...

I've never seen a Danmar one, but Vater makes one called the "Vintage Bomber". It's synthetic fleece over cork. They go for about $20.00.

It's nothing fancy, just a Tama #6553 external tone control with snare wires duct taped to it. The main difference between that and the homemade units shown elsewhere on this site is that the snares lie flat on the head and have a slight muffling effect. I have exactly the same thing on both of my d...

I've never tried the 42-strand snare, but I have tried the new Pearl thing. The positives: it goes on the drum very easily and securely and almost all unwanted snare buzz (from hitting the bottom of the main drum with the pedal) is eliminated. Also, it looks less "homemade" if that matters...

The cymbal has arrived and it's everything it's supposed to be! Even more, as I find I can get a decent "dark crash" out of it in addition to the couple of VERY different ride sounds. I'll be using this one a lot. Many thanks Will!! I should also mention that the cymbal was very well packe...

I'm currently using an old Jacques Capelle hi hat stand; it goes really high, enough to easily clear the top of my drum (early '60's Ludwig Miami Beach). These stands are getting harder to find, but they occasionally show up on e-bay. If you can find one, it should solve your height problem. I tried...

The guy I spoke to was astonished that somebody in Philadelphia would know about this cymbal. I told him about this forum and I got the impression that he thought I was kind of nuts (clearly an astute judge of character).

I'm really looking forward to getting this. Thanks again!
