You could get a welding/fab shop to make a simple u-shaped bracket out of flat stock with the appropriate bends. Take a picture and your drum, let them measure it. It shouldn't cost very much. I use 4. Keeps the drum more stable if you have lots of stuff hung off it. I had trouble balancing mine. If you can evenly distribute the weight of the snare, cymbals, etc. then 3 works.

typically I put one mic on the kick, and in larger venues, another on the tom rim to pick up the snare tom and hat. Gives me more than enough coverage - especially with americana style music. Plus the clubs are not put off by a big drum set and the associated stage space, and volume issues. Matthew...
