I went and bought a 12mm sheet of wood, nothing special. The gigpig uses around the same thickness so I think it should be okay. As for wood, I chose a piece that seemed to be around the same pitch as the drums should be. I cut up the sheets today with a jigsaw. I'm planning on using squared lengths...

Thanks for the advice jmettam. I'm not finished playing around with the shell sizes. I will probably end up cutting down some toms and making small tom and snare (single sided). I really like the sound of the snare as a tom though, I may incorporate that into my micro and/or regular kit!

My cocktail set up

Hello, I've had my micro kit (4 piece, 16" bass drum) set up in my bedroom for awhile now but need the space, so I've put together a cocktail kit out of my spare drums. I opted for a sit down kit so i could use open/closing hi hats and possibly doubly bass pedals later. I have a 14" floor ...

BUILDING A BOX DRUM KIT

Hello everyone, I've been playing around with various cocktail set ups for about a year now. I've put together a mini kit which sounds really gutsy yet fits in 2 bags. After much thought, I have decided to try and build a drum kit in a box, inspired mainly by the Gigpig ( and Peter Lau's boxtail pro...

I have a travel kit that I've been putting together for awhile. I found a cheap new 12" snare on ebay for $27 australian. It has a 16" bass drum with pearl conversion parts (bass legs and a bass leg attachment that the pedal attaches to). I use a 12" tom as a floor and temporily an 8&...

Great idea

Thanks, I was planning to buy another 10" splash next week. That's a lot better than using a regular cymbal attachments, looks better too.

Bass drum

Actually, it's a percussion plus floor tom. I picked it up for $80 brand new at the local drum shop, they're meant to be $100 but it didn't have legs so i got it cheaper, which is fine because I planned to use it as a BD.

jmettam wrote: Think about this, you could cut the 14" in half (or 1/3 - 2/3 ) and add straps to expand it upward with a gap! That's a great idea! I'm about 6.1' so in order for me to sit at a comfortable height i need to raise the 14" legs all the way, leaving the bass skin so high that t...

Guess I should have scaled that one down.

My micro kit, it's almost alive!

Hey guys, I realise it's not a cocktail kit but it's pretty close! (a cocktail is my next project) <img src='http://i14.tinypic.com/40erex2.jpg' width='450'> I've been collecting the pieces for awhile now. The goal is to make a drum kit that you can carry in one trip, including all hardware. The 8&q...

14'' tom inside a 16'' tom

Hey Zorf, I've got an answer to your question. You can't fit a 14'' tom inside a 16'' tom with the bottom lugs still on. I found out the hard way after purchasing both, intending to make a "micro kit" with the 16'' as bass and 14'' as a standard floortom, then stack everything inside the 1...

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help Jim! I got a quote for $100AU to convert my tom into a snare, including all parts, hoops, snare action, skins etc. This would make my budget project a bit too much, especially since it's a percussion plus tom shell! I think I may just go for laying to 14'' tom down as a bass dru...
