This one's turning into a recurring gig. The next one is this weekend, same times, same place:

I've had some luck (in my right-handed setup) mounting the snare way at the end of the L-shaped arm, which brings it a little further 'around' the drum for me. The Yamaha hardware is sturdy enough to support that. Still, I guess the asymmetrical setup is a design decision that really compromises the...

Jeremy, those are surely Paistes- he's been playing them forever. They could be prototypes, like those überhats he plays on his traditional kit (17"? are you kidding?). If not, my money's on the hi-hat being 2 splashes, maybe 10" Signatures or 9" Traditionals. The other cymbal looks l...

Just for grins, I scanned the instructions that came with my Club Jordan. They have a suggested setup for lefties. I'll email the whole scan to John, but here's the bit with the setup suggestion- if it helps at all. It's a little different than what John described but still doesn't look terribly com...

It's not really a "clutch" per se; just a pair of round metal fittings that tighten onto the arm to position and set the tightness/looseness of the hats.

cadolfan,

Welcome aboard! I've had a medium 18" A and a pair of 13" K/Z hats on my Jordan's cymbal arm at the same time and it was plenty solid. I'm sure your selup will be fine..

I've never seen the mounts sold separately, but one option might be to pick up the 12x5 Yamaha Stage Custom share, which comes in a "natural" finish with a YESS-compatible mount and runs under $100 new, and buy a silver sparkle wrap for it.

Our man Steve has been touring with Clapton, and he used the cocktail kit for an acoustic set on the tour. This stuff is mostly Zapruder tape quality so the video and audio aren't great, but it's fun viewing for the true cocktail geek. "Back Home": http://youtube.com/watch?v=bTYrurXtePw &q...

Robert, it's a guitar/bass/drums trio. The bass player might be playing an upright, I'm not sure. You're right about filling out the sound; it'll be rods & brushes for me all day which will fatten things up a little bit while keeping the volume down. Should be able to use lots of space to fill t...

The sound he's getting on the side snare is a riot, too - somewhere between a coffee can and a cross-stick. On my Jordan, I've got that snare's batter tuned as low as it will go without getting too much 'stick bite' with every hit, and it sounds to my ears like a smaller, quieter version of a "...

Steve is the man, with or without a cocktail drum! His DVD should be required viewing for all drummers. (He's holding the 8" CJ snare on the cover, and there's video of his tech packing up a CJ, but no video of him playing it :( Still good viewing/listening though.) Not cocktail, but one of the...

Steve Jordan cocktail drum videos

Here's the current patron saint of the Cocktail Drum doing his thing with the John Mayer Trio at last year's "ReAct Now" Katrina benefit. Check out his technique on the drums and the way he's got them tuned, in particular. Of course, even on a traditional kit, Steve uses some out-there tun...
