Hey Mil Very nice sentiments indeed. My dad was a part time musician (upright bass) but my musical interests and intesity kind of eclipsed his when I was pretty young. Though he too was fully supportive of my musical pursuits through his life. It's so cool that you still have chances to play with yo...

A very clever idea. Some of the DYI-ers here at the forum should be able to rig up something very similar with a stock shockmount and some lightweight bungees. Should work very well on a studio kit, but I'm not sure that this device would do well if travelled heavily. Post if anyone tries one of the...

Hey mil That's definitely the idea and in that we have cocktail drums, I see no reason to need to shell out more dough for a cool trick like this one. Taking a cue from Keith Cronin and from ideas here on the forum (thanks to John for all his input) I pieced together a pedal plate so I could use my ...

Hey mil,
If you ever try this (cocktail as part of a larger percussion rig) do post a pic and/or tell how it works for you.
And thanks for asking about their audition - they did well and were placed in the show!

Hey Peter Thanks for your reply and insight into your use of rototoms in a cocktail kit. I have an ebony pinstripe on my 18" roto right now and I'll try some of my experiments again using a wood beater, additional muffling and will consider mic'ing, however I was kind of hoping that I could get...

I may be getting your thread off topic, but.... Last year I tried doing some playing with my14x24 bigdrum on its side - yes, horizontally. And I was sitting for this! It was kind of a cool way to use the cocktail kit, kind of in a jungle/bop approach, but I did have to use some additional stands, as...

for Peter Lau: rototoms as/with cocktail kit

Recent reference to one of Peter Lau's (many) cocktail designs was centered on a 16 or 18" rototom horizontally mounted as a kick. Peter, if you would, please tell us how that has worked for you... You posted those pics a while ago, but I'm wondering whether you continued using it, it's advanta...

some double drumming

My son asked me to help rehearse his band for an upcoming audition, so I set up the cocktail kit - just in case! There were a few times where I sat down on the kit to offer their drummer some ideas, but most of the time I guided the band along (tempo, groove and form) from the cocktail kit. Trad kit...

I certainly don't want to scare you off - acrylic shells are pretty tough but may not be as forgiving in some cases as wood. I considered this with a shell that was to be rather long (24") and sometimes knocked around in a soft case during transport. I was also concerned about how it would hold...

Hi When I was first exploring construction of my cockail kit, I was thinking about acrylic too. I gotta say, the fragility of a long, exposed and rather expensive acrylic tube concerned me. So, I went with 8ply maple (24x14) and I'm very happy with it. And I don't blink when packing and moving it. I...

site radio - Melissa Errico

Hey I just moseyed over to the site and heard some very musical cocktail kit playing on Melissa Errico's ...Still Love You (?) Anyone want to fess up to that most excellent playing or if not, does anyone know who played cocktail kit on the track? Also liked the way it's mixed, the kit is on the low ...

Consistent with everything I've found - leaving me only partially nuts. The first time I encountered these challenges is when I used my unused 9x13 Gretsch tom mounted on an LP cowbell pedal holder. Definitely fun and zany sounding as another kick but with the problems of hitting right near the rim ...

thanks for the reply, and now a bit off topic.... I asked about this since I've recently been playing a bit more on my microkit which has a 16x16 kick and a homemade riser-thingy. I may be outta my mind, but ever since I've been playing smaller diameter kicks (on my cocktail and micro kits) I've kin...

Hey John

I've never seen anyone play one of these. Clue me in - do you play standing/sitting? Given the snare is directly above the kick and pedal, is it uncomfortable? What are some of the benefits to this kind of a kit?

The handle is cool.

PS Happy New Year everyone!

Hey John Any photo details of your bongo mounting design? I'd be interested in the 'bits from the hardware store' that made the final mount work. I bet the bungees are what provides the extra strength! Boingggg And the contact paper you're using looks pretty nice! Where's that from? PS Your playing ...
