Really nice set. The cocktail conversion is a very interesting feature. Shows how to make a drum set really versatile. Only problem - the price...

Hi Vic. Thank you for the observations. That's where my head is going these days. I just saw an Egnater Tweaker amp on the web - 15 watts, reasonable size, with many options for tailoring the tone. Of course, not sure what it's like clean but I hope to get to a city where one is on display soon. Ano...

Tiki and John, Thank you for the advice. As it happens I had a chance a couple days ago to play a "gig," all of three songs at a friend's party, not really jazz since I just stuck to the melody pretty much, did a little bit of noodling. Anyway I started with a 5 watt Epiphone Valve Jr. A f...

Cocktail drum and guitar jazz

I recently started playing (what I hope will be) jazz style guitar. Question: if anyone here plays jazz on a cocktail set with an electric guitarist, how many watts does his amp have? I'm looking to buy a new amp but I'm unsure whether to get a large amp (50-100+ watts) or whether a small amp (5-10 ...

That's really great to see you in action with the kits you have created Peter. And I would think soundwise they fit very well too - proof that a person who knows how to play well is the most important thing about good sounding drums. The sound clips you have posted on the Lau Brothers page prove tha...

Hi Peter! Nice to hear from you again.

It was nice to see one of your drums in action. I remember when you posted the pictures of the 10 inch and 12 inch drums. Do they have a deeper sound than the Boxtail units?

Thanks for posting.

One suggestion of a place to look for hardware would be www.drummaker.com. When I built my drum I found literally everything I needed there (except a bass drum pedal). Not sure I can visualize the mount you are describing but give 'em a try - there isn't much they don't have. Good luck.

Hey Peter, nice mini-kit! It looks really nice in white and blue - almost like a race car. Say -could you put an engine in it and drive it to your gigs?

I always like to see what you invent, Peter. And it's great to know your instruments will get played. Keep up the good work.

Have you considered using your computer as a recorder? You can get a good sounding audio interface for about $35 (Behringer AU-101 USB interface) or a professional audo card for around $100. A small mixer or mic preamp, an inexpensive condenser mic and recording software (16 track recorders, Kristal...

I use an Evans Hydraulic oil filled for the bottom head on mine and a 3 in. terrycloth square inside the drum controls the ringing a little, just enough. Loose cotton balls are used by quite a few players here. Half the fun of a cocktail kit is experimenting. In my case it beats learning to play...

NICE! Even a "limited" MP3 makes the kit sound good-congratulations! And it looks "coolly original." Have you thought of training the cat to play? (you'll never escape the cat references...) It'll be interesting to see what you think of it once you use it in a gig situation. Agai...

Looks cool, and is portable! Doesn't get much better. Quite a well thought out set- let us know how it works on a gig.

There have been other folks hereon who have used a suitcase for a bass drum and it seemed to work out well. The Two-Tones is one group that is equipped similarly.

I bought a six ply maple Keller shell and marked it for eight lugs. It was cheaper than a Club Jordan by a long shot and wasn't too difficult once I remembered my high school geometry. I think www.drummaker.com (that's where i got it) will lay it out and mark the places to drill for like $30 or $40 ...
