home built drum

The new drum is in operating order!! It's a Keller 6 ply maple shell with sanding sealer. I like natural grain! Basic bowtie lugs, triple flange hoops, Gibraltar cymbal mount with a Sabian B8 14" crash and Pulse pedal. What you hit it with (brushes and Vic Firth Rutes so far), and where, makes ...

Sam Ash seems to have these available: http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?itemid=14872&sourcetype=singleitemsearch In fact there are a couple for sale on E-bay right now, one of which closes in 4 hours or so. Interesting concept, somewhat like JT Whitney's (whitneydrums.com) Nesting Peng...

You aren't kidding about the costs going up. Especially with all the options that Mr. Whitney offers. Plus all the stuff that cocktail drum players like to add to their kits. But these players and their associates are flat out creative! If you look at other musicians I'd bet you don't find as high a...

Got Whitney's price list; here is a clip from it. The drums are indeed mostly less than $400. Of course, that's without any extras, like pedal or mounting arms. "Cocktail Drums: Prices include tom legs and are for any depth drum up to 24" Diameter 12" and 13" $350.00 14" $36...

The Whitney drums certainly have a distinct look to them. I've heard that the cocktail drum is fairly reasonable price wise - under $400. Kinda wish I'd looked into this before I ordered the parts to build a drum...

Cocktail drum

I think you just helped me decide on a separate snare. A lot of people on here use separate small snares. I've heard sets using both the snare fans and separate snare drums and the separate ones sound a lot better defined to me. Thanks.

New cocktail kit

Hi Jim. Cool looking cocktail drum. The color combination of the red mahogany and - I'm guessing - brass hardware? - looks good. Do you have snares inside (looks like a knob similar to some of the snare fans people here have made). I'm building a drum also and this makes me think I could do somethin...

It may be good economic sense to just build a good drum to start with. I gotta admit, the 14x24 drums look really cool on stage. And of course that's my objective: to actually play somewhere beside the bedroom! Found a site, drumfoundry.com, that has some interesting aids for drum builders. I'm defi...

Drum shell info

This is quite helpful - thank you. Explains the popularity of maple for not only cocktail but other drums as well.

Decided to go with a cheap floor tom, then if I can learn decent cocktail drumming get a good shell. Use the tom hardware, if it's decent quality, and build a real drum.

Cheap cocktail set

If it isn't too late to get in on this... http://www.nationalmusicsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=120 A website that has a 16x16in. floor tom for $66. (They have a 14x16 tom for $60.) Could you make a basic Astoria or Lake Side type set by adding a pedal and cymbal mount? I don't...

Interesting-definitely makes me think. I've heard from a drummer friend who likes birch more than anything. Since a birch shell is only $20 more it might be worth a try. I may try to see if I can find a store that has examples of both - only one store in this town and nothing else within 40 miles. T...

Newbie questions

Many thanks for the information - I've decided what to do, to start: a 14 x 24 maple drum with a foor pedal and single cymbal. Sounds close to anything like a basic setup, so I'll start with that. Plus it might be more resellable later. I'm going to experiment a lot, which seems to be the way to get...

Newbie question

Hello-new poster here. Got interested in cocktail drums by running across the S.S. Catalina on the Internet.. The ship had a dance floor and the band, "Ginger and the Shipmates," used a set. It was a long time ago! I want to build a basic set-found out about Keller shells and so on. 2 ques...
