A couple of weeks ago when we played, I setup and started playing. Couldn't tune as announcments were going on and such. I forgot that I had the top head tuned high for a snare sound. I was using my side snare, so I flipped the snares off big drum and detuned by feel. Never got a good tom sound, but...

Flat Side Drums
I've noticed that alot of you guys have your side drums mounted flat. I have my snare flat because I'm right over it, but if I mount my tom flat, I always manage to hit the rim in a fast fill so it is at a slight angle.

Cocktail Cymbals
Last night, the Jazz/Standards band I play in, did a high profile benefit gig and I took the Cotail Kit and a set of cymbals that I though would work and Man-O-Man was I ever right. I used, all Bosphorus Masters, a 19" ride @ 1533 g, a 19" flat @ 1540g and a set of 14" hats. They migh...

Side Snare
Who uses a side snare with your kit and what size? I have one, 12x5 and use it most of the time, but since I am getting a good snare sound out of my main drum, I'm beginning to use it less. Just the main drum a 10" tom and my 6 & 8" concert toms occasionally.

Yeah, I do most of the time, but am trying to play more standing. J is right about being in controll of your highhat and being able to do more intricate work with the foot pedal when seated. Remember that if you get the main drum too high, you will have trouble with the pedal striking the bottom hea...
