Had another thought for a vertical style kit... Using 6 tom brackets and short rods (sawed from tom legs) mount the snare on the tom with some space inbetween. This would give you some height adjustment for the snare and space to minimize sympathetic vibrations. John Mettam posted some ideas here on...

here's a simple starting idea: I think you're looking to do an astoria style kit - though with a smaller floor tom, right? ie; http://www.cocktaildrum.com/gallery/show.php?pid=125&file=Ast1.jpg 2 or 3 floor tom mounts, 1 or 2 cymbal S-arms. Mount a tom bracket on the side of the tom and another ...

just more speculation here... The bigdrum looks to me like a 14x20 bass drum - note what appears to be about 3 inches of clearance on each side of 14" snare shown in the stacked pic. 14x20 was the smaller of the 2 typical "standard" sizes from Ludwig in that era. 14" was typical ...

John - congratulations on your new kit! ...and a very detailed post. So this kit comes with 2 toms in addition to the big drum? As you've spent some time and effort tuning the kick and tom combination (ad you'll likely refine it further) let us know what kind of tuning, head combinations, and muffli...

Matthew Yes it is kinda heavy, but keep in mind that I have a smallish big drum, and just a 10" snare and 8" tom. My cymbals are on the smaller and lighter side too. I suspect that the total weight is a somewhat less than gettinig a Jordan with heavier cymbals into that bag. But it was rea...

Ok, height measures 41" outside. Another note about height is that when I stack all drums and cymbals, it pushes the 41" limit a bit but there is some wiggle room with the case and it's padded separators so all is safe and secure.

John Right - your post tipped me off. I'll measure height and confirm in a post later. Another thing to add is that the straps/handle are well made and adjustable. And with a short schlep and reasonable amount of maneuvering space, I've (a couple of times) hauled the whole mess hanging on my back. O...

Matthew I have this Beato triple tom bag http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Beato-Pro-1-Triple-Tom-Bag?sku=549646 I got it for my cocktail kit and it works well for me. I have a 14x24 however. I pack it with its legs and then put my 16" crashride then smaller cymbals on top. I use the padde...

rockin, Peter!
keeps getting micro-er and micro-er but the sound is still punchy! Nice. Do you play this kit with sticks? If so, does it sound much different?
What are the drum 'shells' or bodies made from?

Thanks for the additional info, John. I had a few responses for robertm in my post, but seems to have been lost with the response 'quote'. Robertm it was about bongos and snongos and variations on the kid's models but I don't recall the specifics - sorry!

Very cool, John. Wish I knew about this gig - I'm close to NYC... gigs listed on the CocktailAngst website I presume? Very nice video, sound and group performance. And your playing is excellent as always. Especially love the snare sound and the variety you get out of it - is anyone else able to get ...

Confirm for me though: since you play a lot of single cocktail drum (with other percussion piled on), do your bongos get extra play time for backbeats or other non-bogo parts - therefore dying an early death? Also, what is your thought on using natural heads with the amount and kind of gigging you ...

bongos, bognos

I'm looking to pick up some lightweight bongos to strap on to the ol cocktail kit - I'm only interested in pretuned types since I want to steer clear of issues with natural heads. I know several here use the Remo Kid's bongos of which I've seen a couple different models. I'm also familiar with their...

Just a thought about your 2-pc kit idea.... I recently did a lo volume blues/swing jam and wanted to a) sit, b) use pedalled hats, and c) have the nuance of a traditional snare. I packed up my afore-mentioned 16x16 in a hard case (which I used for a throne), 5x13 snare and a small frame drum (which ...
