I love cymbals. If you want to hear some nice cymbal work, pick up the latest Steely Dan from about 3 years ago with Steve Gadd. They won an Emmy for that and the drum work is very tight and subtle. I've been trying to get just the right cymbals. I had nothing. Been ten years since I stopped playing...

My 'heavy metal 'cocktail kit
Once I saw that Slingerland has a regular kick for their new 'cocktail' outfit, I felt I could go ahead and do the same. You'll see when I put up the pics, but my set is tuned like a studio rock kit. All Stagg cymbals which I swear by. Surprisingly, my little Peter Erskine picolino actually sounds l...

My double decker hihat set up
I finally figured out how to get two sets of hats on my clamp up hat stand. I'm using a set of 14" on the bottom which are kept slightly open for the 'open' sound. Right on top is a set of splash 10s that are kept closed. This is fun.
Stand by for pics in a couple days.

I've got three of those LP blast blocks now. I'm not sure why, but I love them. The green one works for a cow bell or a cross stick sound. Do you use a nylon tip stick? Maybe that's the problem. Different sticks have different sounds on them. Depends where you strike them too. I think they're great.

Traditional or match grip?
Now that I'm playing standing I have a choice again between traditional grip or match grip. At first with the snare drum right up there, I went back to 'concert snare' traditional position and felt pretty good about it. But now that I'm practicing the rudiments upstairs while watching TV, seems like...

Naugahyde my friends - kit update
Well, still exploring my new 'stand up' world and trying to get good sounds and positions right now. I've tuned my Peter Erskine 10" picolino DOWN quite a bit. I am amazed to find a deep snare sound of all things. Then, I decided I didn't like the ringy toms anymore. This comes from my years pl...

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the 'double bass hihat clutch' pic. Somebody showed me the exact thing today, but that wasn't the solution for me. I got a regular hihat that is on a boom - no pedal or stand part. I put the top hat in a regular clutch. But the bottom has a screw thing that raise...

In Pursuit of an Open Hihat Sound
After setting my drums up, I'm very happy, but I really miss the control of the hihat. I have a nice closed hat sound, but can't figure out what to do about an open sound. I have my 16" ride/crash next to my hat, so I tap the ride when I want an open hat sound. I don't know what else to do. I'v...
