Hey All,

I am on a cleaning/space making rampage and I am getting rid of all of the drum stuff I do not use. So, I am letting my Travel Cocktail Drum Project go.



You can read all about it at the link below. Since I wrote up the article I have replaced the rims with solid 6 lug rims. This really made a big difference to the sound!

That means that there are a few more holes in the shells since it was originally a 5 lug drum. The shells are still solid great sounding vintage shells even though they are a bit rough and tumble.

Just looking to make back what I spent on hardware to upgrade the drums.

NO PEDAL INCLUDED but I will include vintage legs!

Now that i'm (almost ) over my disappointment, a couple of questions;

Do you think that the gap between the drums enhanced or diminished
the volume or bass. I wonder if there was a way to adjust the gap for
Different height or tune the drums bass response.
I wonder if an inch or two either direction would make much difference.

If you were to do it again, would you use the same sizes for an all around
Cocktail, or was this more for compactness?

And lastly, did you ever manage to hang any stuff off of the upper drum?

Here are some answers:

I think that the gap being vertical worked against the resonance of the drum a small bit. But...

I wonder if there was a way to adjust the gap for different height or tune the drums bass response. I wonder if an inch or two either direction would make much difference.

I wanted to make attachments that would allow for adjustable gap but did not get around to it. By holding the drums together and varying the distance there was a definite difference in tone with different gaps! The wider the gap the more the bass resonates.

If you were to do it again, would you use the same sizes for an all around
Cocktail, or was this more for compactness?

This was all about compactness! I think that having drums 1" apart is probably the best, I thought about 2" apart (13" & 15" but I think that the tone and the playability would have suffered. I would however consider using slightly larger drums, 14" & 15" just to get a bit more oomph.

And lastly, did you ever manage to hang any stuff off of the upper drum?

Funny, I actually did hang a cymbal and cowbell off of the rim once I put on the 6 hole rims. Worked pretty well but the rubber strips were holding all of the weight of the top drum plus the other hardware. It tended to sag just a bit with that much on it.

Again, secure metal straps would have completely done the trick!

How did the snare half work for you?

What do you think of a 13" snare half and a 15 or 16" bass half?
Would that look or sound weird to have the two parts with a big size difference?

The 13" snare worked well! I tend to tighten the top head a lot to get more snap so it was a pretty high pitch. Nice crack sound.

I think using a large bottom half would work fine. I just worry about adding an inch or two between me and the top drum. I already tend to lean in a bit on a regular Cocktail Drum so I think I would be leaning even farther with a much smaller top drum.

Do you think reinforced rims play into the size calculations?
In other words, If my 2 shells are 1 inch apart, is the ring on the
larger drum going to make it too snug when i collapse the column?

It would seem like rings would make the edge stiffer and help with the mounting hardware.

Yes, you have to take rings into consideration. These two drums DID have reinforcing rings and still fit one inside the other. You may have to use flat nuts on the lower drum hardware if things are too tight.

Yes, the extra thickness helps. On my drum I used threaded inserts that need all the thickness they can get to fit nice and tight!
