I learned alot after this past recording. The engineer at the studio is quite an impressive drummer himself. He had me try some different cymbals for the recording that ended up sounding better than I thought they would.
Anyone looking for a nice ride cymbals for a cocktail set try these if you see them at the music store:
18" Sabian El Sabor, its looks a little weird because the edge is turned up just a bit. It makes for a great crash ride. I think I need to buy one of these for myself. The bell has a really clean sound.
18" Zildjian A crash/ride. Its a really dry sounding ride, you can build up the tones easily if you play from the bell back to the edge. Crashes okay, but its a little on the loud side for crashing with a cocktail set. The bell is sounds great but you have to hit it just right.
20" Zildjian Simitar Ride. Its a discontinued cheapo zildjian from about 8 years ago. I have had this cymbal for along time and used it to record three times in the past. Sounds great and has an excellent bell. The nice thing for a cocktail set is the cymbal's volume level doesn't get too loud. Its very easily controlled as opposed to an A zildjian. They are quite cheap used these days too. The only thing I didn't like about it is its too heavy for the cocktail drum, you'd probably need to take a stand for it unless your drum has four legs. Which kinda defeats the purpose of a cocktail set.
The engineer told me to never dismiss using a heavier crash cymbal for a ride because they can fit really well when played on a smaller kit. The volume and tone works quite well.

re: 18" Zildjian crash ride:
I have an 18" Zildjian A medium ride that works very well w/the cocktail kit as both a ride & a crash. Very useful cymbal - records beautifully.
The amazing thing to me as an audio engineer is how certain cymbals can sound so interesting in context (i.e. full kit/full mix) and so goofy on their own. Experiment!

Its always nice having extra cymbals, I typically get "locked into" using a certain setup after I find it fits the music well. However, changing up every now and then for a fresh sound is always a fun thing to do. Especially of you're a cymbalholic like I am.
