Check out this youtube video of Karen Carpenter, I think it's from when She & her brother had a TV show. She does a drum solo on various sets & percussion and right at the beginning she's playing on a Slingerland cocktail set up in which the snare sets right on top of the bass drum, forgot what this model was called, I've seen em here on the lounge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdHyzGXAJPg

Thanks for the clip!

Looks to me like a non-production of the Ludwig Gold Coast. Looks to me like a 20" kick with a 14" metal snare (Gold Coast was an 18" kick with a 13" wrapped snare)

Doesn't it say Slingerland on the bass drum head? Whoops! went back and viewed the clip again, She was obviously sponsored by Ludwig. It's a supraphonic snare. It sure looks like the Slingerland set up of the day, I wonder if Ludwig built that special for her show?

while I was enjoying this vistalite-crazy Karen party, I noticed another:

In that vid she's playing what appears to be a vistalite gold coast 'outfit' in the opening minute. I've never seen anyone play one of those - looks kind of uncomfortable with the pedal centered directly below.

In all of those karen C 70s tv productions it's amazing how consistent her sound is, thin sticks, splashy somewhat inarticulate cymbal sound, and cavernous muffled drums - quite unlike vistalite! But you could see through to her and quite the showwoman she was.

You know, if you watch, you can see that she could really play & had some chops but her drums consitently sound like soggy cardboard boxes. I wonder if that is just a loss of sound quality from the original production quality to what we are used to hearing now?
