Sounds good, Johnny!

How deep is the 12" drum you're playing?

And is that odd head you use a loud or quiet sound?

Any baffles or separation between heads? Air holes in the shell?

Okay - enough questions. Very cool of you to post a link to your music - keep up the great playing!
Hi All,

I recently contributed a cocktail drum part to a track on a friend's album project: "Destination Venus" by Todd Giudice.

Todd really wanted this track to sound kinda different from all the others on the CD: a more stripped-down, acoustic, swamp-y sound. If you're actually interested in hearing the tune, you can get it here:

<a href="http://home.att.net/~johnbeekman/public ...

In case you're *still* interested, here's Todd's website:

www.toddgi ...

Any ffedback is appreciated.

Best to ALL,
Thank you very much for the kind words...any feedback is good, but positive feedback is even better!

To answer your questions about my drum, it's 28" deep. Are you ready for this - it's actually the larger drum from an old 1965 Ludwig conga pair! In case you aren't familiar: the Ludwig congas had a straight taper, as opposed to the familiar bowl-tapered shape of most "real" congas; and they used a conventional drum head instead of a real ring-mounted goatskin conga head. As congas they sounded pretty dreadful, as you might imagine. They must've been designed by someone whose only exposure to anything latin was watching "I Love Lucy" episodes.

Anyway, I used the "Ricky" drum for the kick and tom sounds - with handheld brushes or sticks, not with a pedal, of course. I'm sure some cocktail drum ultra-purists would question whether this is even a true "cocktail drum", but we'll leave that for another post...

I use the 12" Remo BahiaBass head with no muffling, tape, or any other "furniture". Actually, on this studio track I *might* have used an external clip-on tone control for just a smidge of muffling...

I'm not really sure what you mean by "soft" or "loud" sound: it sounds pretty darned good at all volume levels. To me, that's the hallmark of a well-tuned drum with the "correct" head. If you're asking whether the sound is "attack-y" vs. "round", the answer is: yes. Depending on the sound I want, I just use different beaters and/or technique -the drum/head combination itself is extremely versatile.

I think the reason the BahiBass head works is because it minimizes the inherent "clicky-ness" that the ear normally associates with a smaller-diameter drum. Does that make any sense?...

I also use a BahiaBass head on my 16" Ludwig cocktail drum, along with a lambswool pedal beater. I'd stack it up against a 24" DW kick any day! - well, almost....

Take care and good luck!
Thanks for the informative reply! Am I correct in understanding that you play the 12" drum by HAND, not foot? So your kit is a standup 12" drum and a (I assume) regular snare? Interesting! how do you approach playing that setup? Do you play time on hat or cymbal with one hand, and play all "kick" and snare parts with the other?

Also, where have you been able to purchase the Bahia Bass head?I can't find it anywhere.

My question about volume pertained to the rather unusual material used to make that head - it's hard for me to imagine a head like that being anywhere near as loud as a mylar head.

On your 16", do you use the top head as a snare?

I'm looking to buy/build the ultimate "Zen" drum, that gets a really good bass sound AND a really good snare sound, all out of just one drum.

Oh, and I'd like it to do my taxes and mow my lawn. Maybe I'm asking too much.... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
Still waiting for that REO reunion........
