Other drummers dissing Remo heads
Hey gang, I was on ANOTHER drum forum and it seems like everyone on there disses Remo drumheads. I have used these forever and have never had a problem with tuning or to any huge degree, the coating flaking off. Has anyone else had any problems with Remo? I put on a coated Ambassador on the snare drum side of my cocktial kit and it sounds excellent with the brushes.
I was a huge Remo fan for years and years, then I decided that I needed to check out the others. here is what I discovered. Out of the box and on the kit Evans had the best Tone, then Remo, then Aquarian. I did try Attack on the kick head but I really wasn't anything special, I haven't really checked out the Attack line. After months of 6 nighters, Evans heads died quickly, Remo held up far better and Aquarian stayed relativley it's same tone from the start. Bottom line Evans makes a great head, but loses it's tone way to quick for me and becomes a total pain in the butt to tune, it also lost its coating on the snare faster than any other head. Remo makes a great head and I found holds up a longer over all than Evans. I really can't complain about Remo over all my Remos still tune up even when beat to death and still sound liveable even after years of beating. Now Aquarian, yup sounded not as bright, lively or as fat as either Remo or Evans BBBBBBUUUUUTTTTTTT. These head sounded damn near the same from the time I put them on till the Time I took them off. They lasted as long as Remo but held up on their tone even after tour after tour.
So Which heads are better, They are all great. If you have to pick the best head for:
Short Term- Evans
Medium Term To Long Term- Remo
Long Term-Aquarian
Personally I love the Evan Kick heads with the EQ Ring, I use only Remo Coated Am on my snares, but on my floor tom I use Aquarian clear.
The bottom line is all the heads are quality and every manufacturer has had a problem with a batch or two that someone will have ended up getting. Like any tool one should not avoid a brand, it may have that one tone your looking for on a specific drum. I hope this long winded thing helps you out.
