put the stick between your pointer and middle finger almost in the middle of the stick but a little closer to the butt end.Make your fingers"walk",but keep them straight, your wrist willmove with it a little...it takes a while to get the speed going.. and then playing in time with the spinning is a whole new game, keep the stick in the crease{closer to your hand}also this helps with gaining speed...good luck..I hate to admit it but go watch old videos of Tommy Lee and or Rikki Rocket ,they had the stick thing down real good. good luck.

Not exactly what you are looking for but you may get some good ideas from checking out these videos:

If anyone knows of a good tutorial online, please post it!

There was actually a video on this and other visual stuff. It was called "Visual and Special Effects Drumming" by Kato J. Peragine, published by Power Rock Enterprises only in VHS format. I think it's out of print now. I run the music library at Steve Weiss Music and we still have one copy left ($23.95) if you want it. (Sorry for the commercial; if it was improper for me to post this please delete).

Spinology

Post by jmettam »

There is also a well known book all about stick twirling called 'Spinology' that comes with a DVD. Go to Musician's Friend at:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/?sourcei ... 0040843494

and search for 'spinology'

Well, I found this little sample from the Spinology DVD. It's a start! I'm amazed at how little there is about this on the web...

Seems to me that there was an article in Modern Drummer about this some months back.

This is kindof off topic, but the link for the clip of Thomas Lang comes from a video that he did a while back. I have it. It's about 5 hours long...I think. I haven't gotten all the way through it. There's a lot of cool stuff on it; especially stuff that refers to coordination, fills, showmanship, etc. It also has a second disk that has additional footage of Thomas playing, printable drum music, audio clips to play with that you can speed up or slow down (with the right computer software). It's a great tool for intermediate to "expert" drummers. I think I paid $40 USD for it. I just thought I'd let you guys know in case your in a bit of a rut in your playing and you need something to get those creative juices going...very important when playing the cocktail drum. lol.
