tuning & new sounds

Post by multiperc »

Previously poseted about tuning the big drum. Thanks to everyone's input on that, I've been experimenting more with tuning intervals, different heads, beaters, brush/rod/stick sizes and muffling both for acoustic and mic'd situations. Along the way I've stumbled across some odd but potientially useful results.

Anyone discover an alternate or bizarre sound for the big drum - whether used as a kick/tom or kick/snare arrangment?

For those using a 16x16 Astoria-style, any new tips for taming top head resonance or any new sounds discovered?

Any new discoveries with tuning other drums in the kit to add a cool variation to your cocktail sound?

new vintage style heads?

Post by multiperc »

Coated single ply heads seem to be popular around here (especially ambassadors) for top of big drum, and Powerstroke3 for bottom. Any other good combinations?

Is anyone using any of the newer 'vintage' style heads available such as the Evans Etched, Remo Reniassance or Fibreskin series, or other similar?
