Hi,

This is a fun site, but admit it: you people are geeks.
Well...I guess I'm not immune any longer...
I recently found something in a junky music store I'm
considering picking up, but want to know how big of an
idiot its acquisition will turn me into. Any comments or advice on the
following description would be MOST APPRECIATED!

Here's what I found:

14", ROUND-BADGE GRETSCH SINGLE-HEADED cocktail
drum. Badge looks like mid-50's to me, although the wrap
makes it look older. Shell and edges are perfect. Missing
one leg and parts of the snare assembly, but this seems to be
based on the standard Gretsch tone control mechanism, so I
can fix that. Original snare wires in good, usable cond.
WMP wrap is intact and physically fine but a tad yellow.

It is missing one leg. It also appears to be missing two
mounting brackets on the upper half of the drum.

This is the big question for me: what was originally
mounted to the upper part of the drum? Anybody have any catalog
pictures they can scan and email to me? Also, am I correct in
thinking that this is a single-headed cocktail drum? The bottom
edge has a finished wood ring around it, and no obvious way
of mounting a rim and head.

The shop wants a reasonable price for it, and I'm thinking
about picking it up as a restoration project. If all else fails,
I may pick it up to use as a weird tom--in terms of its pure coolness
as a drum, this thing is fab. However, I would LOVE to
restore it to its original specs. Am I going to have to build
a time machine to get parts for this?

HELP ME! PLEASE GOD HELP ME!

Thanks.
