Sorry. I was distracted by the name of the band painted on the drum head...

Hey Ratat,

How about you turn the kick drum sideways and mount it on legs!

I like that the kick drum is as tall as the Cocktail Drum!

which reminds me....
somewhere long ago in a sliver of my foggy memory I remember seeing some film footage, or possibly a photo of Janis Joplin's touring band (Big Brogther & Holding Co)... in which the drummer had possibly 1 or 2 standard bass drums mounted horizontally with inverted pedal(s) striking the uderside head - cocktail style.
Anyone have a recollection of this? If so, what was this odd implementation?

Yupp, it's a 28"x14" slingerland marching bass drum I added spurs to. It is a big old drum!
the band kept complaining that they couldn't hear my cocktail bass drum, so what the hell i figured, they'll hear this one!!!!

I got a 32" I believe sitting in the basement and was just thinking of doing that same thing for a great fun stage look, but the size is a little much. I dig the look though. That's killer

Hey! Do you stand up and play that Bass Drum with the cocktail set? Stray Cats!
I have a video of Lou Reed with his mother? On a sideways 22" Bass drum with a full set around that. I've got a 28" 1952 Olympic Marching Bass drum with those little feet that clip on the Bass rim. Original natural skins. When my bar is closed and the aircon is off the tuning goes way down. Next day, turn on the aircon and wait 1-2 hours it comes back up!

vertical kick drums

Post by tikifreak »

I saw ZZ Top on their "Antenna" tour years ago, and Frank Beard had an insane custom double bass kit with vertically-oriented kick drums. The pedals were underneath striking upwards, just like a Cocktail drum. His small toms were mounted on a custom curved rack that went over the kick drums and had corkscrew-looking turns on each side right above where the tubing met the floor. It was killer, and I've never seen anything else like it before or since. Custom-built, used for one tour, then packed away somewhere. Must be nice !
