Hi Multiperc. The Remo bongos came that way. They were well used so I don't know if the original owner did it. I don't think so - probably the original finish from a long time ago.
Sort of OT - I tried drilling four small (5/64th in.) holes in a Wuhan 12" splash cymbal and putting 1 in. headed nails in them. Quite a bit of high sizzle! I'm going to try the cymbal this weekend in a practice session to see if th sould holds up at all.
