VARI-PITCH COCKTAIL DRUM???
VARI-PITCH COCKTAIL DRUM???
Hi,John & Everyone!
Hmmmm........I have this question in my mind since last year!!Sometimes I just wonder is it a stupid question to ask???OK!infact before I start my 10"COCKTAIL DRUM project.I have this in my mind.Because during the 80,I ever saw one drummer using a sets of YELLOW PEARL VARI-PITCH DRUM(Looks like a REMO ROTO drum with Shell!)on TV.I do have 8",10",12",16"Old Remo Roto Toms. The 18"I already modifty into Bass drum(So call my 1st COCKTAIL DRUM set up style!).Have anyone ever try this?Using 10"Remo Roto Tom on top as a SNARE.Fit into a some thing like 24" or 26" drum shell.12"Roto tom on the bottom as BASS.Wonder how it's sound??any "Idea"of mounting the Roto Tom in the Shell?If.....I say...if...if I'm going to build one.The 8"Remo Roto tom will become the small tom on the Left(without the Shell!).Well!anywhere, just want to share this small little idea.Just hope that, one day it may come true!
Thanks
Regard,
PETER

Roto Toms
Hey Peter,
I'll bet that the roto-tom would work pretty well! I see two difficulties:
1) adding the snare fan to the roto-tom. I would think that it would have to mount to the frame of the roto-tom instead of the shell of the drum (otherwise you can't turn the drum) but maye that makes it easier. Just clamp it on!
2) Mounting the roto-tom in the shell. Roto-toms are heavy so you would need a very sturdy mount. Traditional roto-toms could clamp to a piece of C-channel metal so if you can find the right piece, cut it to fit inside the drum, weld at least two shor pieces perpendicular to the main channel so you have a cross (X) and then figure out a way to secure this inside the drum. Perhaps welding a nut inside each end of the C-channel. Then you can tighten a bolt from the outside of the shell going in to the frame. Use lots of rubber washers and grommets to insulate!
I thing it could work well though!

SNARE'S FAN!
Hi,John!
Thanks a lot.One good news!I already make a "Clamp"for the Snare Fan(Last Night!)Just use a Paper Clip & a small "Plastic part"(Snare Fan fix on it!)that I remove from a Bicycle's Reflector(Normally it fix at the bottom of the Saddle).I just clip it on the Roto's Metal .It works!hahaha!I can easily remove the "Snare Fan"if I want to use that 12"Roto as Tom again!

REMO SNARE!
Hi,John!
Yesterday,I did invite my friends(drummer)just to let them try out my REMO ROTO "SNARE".Well! The 12"ROTO Snare turn out good. No much different from my Original 12" Wood Snare. One good thing is you can just change the" pitch" by turning the Roto Tom either to left or right! It's sounds more like a "PICOLO"Snare. But this drum do have a short fall! When apply on "BOSA"Beat. The "Rim Shot"part is very weak (Due to Shelless!).Well!about the Drum Shell! They prefer that I don't cover the Roto Tom with drum shell.Cause the beauty/chrome Roto Spoke part is "hidden".They still think that, my old 18"Remo Roto look/sound better as a "Bass Drum"(The one that I modify 2 years ago!).Any way,I just leave this "Project"a side first.I will still post the picture to you later!
Thanks

Roto Tom
Hi Peter,
Cool news about the roto-snare! Anyone else out there still have some roto-toms in the basement? I might have some at my parents house!!!
OK, here is an idea for a roto-cocktail kit. Perhaps you can try it with your 16" roto as the kick. If you can create a single virtical pole with attachments on each end to mount the two roto-toms 12" on top, 16" on bottom. Then somehow (this is where your creativity comes in) attach legs/supports to the pole that go around the 16 drum and reach the floor. With enough length to put the 16" drum at a good height for using a cocktail-upsidedown pedal. The only thing that could be strange is positioning the 12" drum. IF it is directly above the 16" drum, it may be too far away when standing up.
I guess the other choice could be to make something like the slingerland no. 286
by mounting the bass drum to the side of a cymbal stand and mounting the snare on top! That would be pretty cool AND portable.
Just a couple of ideas.

Sharing "Idea"!
Hi,John!
Thanks for your "Idea"& the Slingerland's photo.Infact, that's my present setting now.The only different is, I mount the 8"Roto & 12"Roto Snare,12"Hi-Hat on the Tama Cymbal Boom Stand. The 16"Crash(Ride)with Stand are mount on the 18"Roto "KICK".Hey!John, how come we two have the same idea on "Single Virtical Pole" : .OK!This is what I have in mind:-(1)Make a 10"x18"(May be even smaller 8"x18")Virtical Pole.(2)Attached a Tama Tom Holder(with Tama Cymbal Boom Arm) on the Top.(3)Clamp the 12"Roto Snare on it.The 14"Crash/Ride is on the Boom Arm cymbal stand.(4)Use another Tama Boom Arm Cymbal stand for 10"Splash,Clamp the 8"Roto tom & 12"Hi-Hat on it.(5)The 16"Roto"KICK" will fix tight at the bottom(I don't want it "Turn"during the gig!)(6)OK!I do have one small problem, Since the Pole is only 10"(may be 8")wide.I can't use the normal Floor Tom Bracket/legs on it.The Legs will touch the 16"Roto!I have to make a New "Legs"By using either pipe or flat bar.(may be some one there have better "Idea"? )(7)I still have the Old Remo Roto Tom's catalogue,I notice there do have a Half circle shell(For sound projection!).OK!I may use this "Idea"too.Just use to thin plywood and make a Half circle shell attached it to the 12"Roto Snare & 16"Kick. Honestly,I still don't know whether this going to make the sound & the drums look better or not?But one thing for sure,it will be fun by just turning the "Snare" and change the "Pitch"during some song!

Roto-Cocktail
Hey Peter,
One more idea. How about making some sort of leg/bracket that attaches to the spokes of the bottom roto-tom? I believe it would have to clamp in two places along the spoke, extend past the drum rim and then angle down to the ground. Could be relatively small and lighter weight than long bar legs!
