Built my first Cocktail drum - did my first gig with it !

Hey -

I've been wanting to drop the "big kit" and finally finished up my first coctail drum, I'll post some pics soon. Basically a 3 ply- 14 x 30 shell Slingy Lugs, Stick saver rims, Baffeled and Vented, 10" studio hats, 14 crash, 6 splash.

My band has a dobro, stand up bass, couple guitars, and three part harmony, and
they were blown away by the drum...

So happy ...

Awsome, glad it worked out well. Now how did you get a 30" shell. I'd been looking for a shell longer than a 24". Send the pics.

The first gig with a new set is always so cool. Its good to hear I'm not the only one who was this excited to play my first gig with a cocktail set.
I have a question for you before I stop typing. You said the drum is baffled and vented. Is the snare portion or the bass portion vented? How does the venting affect the sound?
I've seen sanre drums with vents, but never had the chance to try one. Now that I think about it I've never used a baffled cocktail drum either.

For the Venting, I drilled several small holes near the top @ 2" from the top
three small holes in a row in three places around the drum.

Same thing on the Bottom - to vent the kick side.

The baffle consists of a 4" high density foam cut to a tight fit with a fiberboard
type material glued to the top and bottom.

After using it a few times, I need to refine my snare fans, and
get resonance from the snare. I think I am going to use a spun reflector
near the top - again attached to the baffel to redirect the sound up toward the
top head.

This weekend I'm doing a gig where I will be able to mic it up, and that sound
be interesting!

Someone asked me where I got the shell, I bought a piece from Tape Ease and cut it down.

Are these shells really one solid piece of 5/16 poplar?

Sounds pretty cool, never heard a poplar kit, especially one piece!

My curiosity is PEAKED...
