silencers/muffling
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to silence your cocktail drum,,as in what would be good for the kick/main drum ? Apartment living can be a drag....
Muffles
Hmmmm... never even thought of this one.
There is a product called 'Drum One SilentOne muffles that I use on a regular kit at times. It is nothing more than pieces of dense foam rubber (1/8" or so) cut to fit on top of your drum heads. For cymbals, they give you a flap of the same material that hangs from the center post. It is not a very sensative surface to play on but it will let you rock out without making too much noise. For the kick they give you a loop of thicker, softer foam to put around the beater. Again, it makes the playing a bit spongy but it does the trick pretty well.
There is another product, the Sabian Quiet Tone Snare Drum that is a tuned head that sits on rubber feet. You put on top of a snare to keep the feel of a real drum head but reduce the volume. I've never tried it but it sounds interesting.
Go to the cocktail drum shop:
http://cocktaildrum.com/shop.html
and click on the musicians friend banner. Then search for 'drum practice'. You'll see several items there.
Of course, if you don't mind taking the head off, I'll bet stuffing a big pillow down the main drum would really kill the resonance and make it VERY quite!
Let us know what you come up with!
Thanks

muffling
If you have an old mouse pad that you don't mind beating up you can just drop that on the drum head. It works almost the same as the foam rubber silencers mentioned in the previous post.
The sabian quiet tones are nice but they can get a little pricey. They are pretty much a drum head feel just like practicing on one of those little tunable practice pads that remo makes.
If you do end up getting those foam rubber silencers you could probably tape one to the bottom head with some good gaff tape. Gaff tape doesn't leave any sticky crap on your heads and rims when you take it off. Great stuff for drum heads, especially in the studio.
