Drums In Your Kit

Post by mangorockfish »

What drums make up your Cocktail Kit? Do you have an additional side tom, a side snare or what. Do you just use the main drum mainly ( no pun intended)?
My kit is made up of a 14X24 main drum with dual snare setup, 12X5 side snare, and 10X8 side tom. I also have a 6" & 8" concert toms I use occasionally.
Never just taken the main drum to a gig, but now that I have a good sound from it, I can see it in the near future.

Typically I use a 16 X 24 maple cocktail main drum as kick and snare. On the right side I have a 13 X 14 floor, on my left I have 9 X 10 tom. This has been my kit for this year anyway. I have been thinking of taking the Club Jordan out again. It has such a great kick snare sound I can't believe it. I've done many skin, dampening changes on the maple shell but it just doesn't give the body as my Yamaha. Anyway when I take the Club Jordan out I use the same tom set up unless it's a really relaxed gig then I'll take the Club Jordan toms. I've toyed with the idea of using the main body as a kick/tom set up but I like the this set up so far.

Greetings to all and a happy 2006. I'm new to the board and what a great place!

Have been building a ctail kit while in rehearsal for a small scale 2-set concert. While somewhat dynamic, the music doesn't require tons of power/volume so I've decided to attempt the show using the new ctail kit (alongside a djembe and HandSonic) INSTEAD of a traditional kit. I'm probably nuts since I've little experience playing ctail style, but I have the benefit of several prep rehearsals, so why not?

That's the background. The kit is pretty complete now (except for finish) and contains: 24x14 bass/tom, 10x8 side tom (10" deep, single head), and a 5x8 snare. I'm working on mounting a small dumbek level with and complementing the side tom. All drums (except dumbek) are maple. I'm using an array of lightweight arms and attachments to mount a crash/ride, splash, spoke, chingring, hats, block & cowbell. The pedal is a DW5000 trigger pedal (no longer used for electronics) with reverse cam. No leg mounting for the pedal needed (yet) since it's heavy and has a velcro'd bottom.

As I read from the posts, tuning is a challenge and an evolving art. I'm using a combination of remo and evans heads - juy's still out on final head choices but I'm getting there! Haven't yet tried Aquarian heads (any recommendations) and natural skin is out of the question. The kit will be mic'd and mixed by me for the concert (thankyou to all who have commented on this issue) and so far, all is sounding pretty freakin sweet!

My drums have changed alot since I first started doing this, however I have finally settled into a few setups that I use alot.

The preference I have changes depending on the situation. I typically play live gigs with the Neon Swing X-perience using a main drum (14X24) as a low tom/bass drum as well as an 8" side tom and a 10" side snare. I have a 14" remix crash and an 18" remix breakbeat ride. When recording with the cocktail drum I change cymbals depending on the song.

For acoustic gigs, instead of two cymbals I take one 18" crash ride and stick to strictly kick and snare (played with brushes). The main drum does have dual snare assemblies inside. That's a lot of fun rocking the basic kick/snare/cymbal set.

I use the cocktail drum for every gig I play except when playing at the Hard Rock Cafe. The Hard Rock usually has several bands playing in one night and the 2 or 3 drummers must share a single drumset to cut down on set-up and take-down time.

Setup

Hi,

My setup is decidedly minimalist. My main drum is 16x24, but the snare mechanism was all rusted out when I got it, so I removed it & never replaced it. So, the main drum is kick/tom. I use a 10x8 snare also. I was thinking about adding a tom as well, but I kinda got into the one tom. It made me play things in a different than usual manner & forced me to be more inventive than I would've otherwise been, so I've decided to stay with just the main drum & the snare.

Drums in my Kit

Well, I got started with a 70s Slingerland 25x14 drum with the snare inside. SInce I worked with that for so long that is still my configuration. I don't even think I've ever done a gig with a side snare! Of course I have added things on but it's mostly been latin-type percussion. As far as additional drums, I use remo kids bongos and a a 10" timbale. I did an unplugged rock tour a while back and used a 5x14 snare drum with the snare removed and thick heads tuned way down as a floor tom sound. It sounded great but it really confused some people!
