Note: I screwed up and posted this to the section on describing your drum. Then I realized that it really belongs here instead.

I have a standard Yamaha Club Jordan (no little snare or tom) and I've done a few mods to make it a little more like a standard rock drum kit. That's why I refer to it now as my "rock-tail" drum. I bought a second cymbal mounting rod a while back and moved my closed high hat cymbals to the left side of the drum. I left my crash cymbal, cowbell, and wood block on the original cymbal mounting rod placed straight across the drum from me. That left the space to my right where Yamaha mounted a percussion board. I took that off and am planning on attaching a 12x10 tom in the following manner. (Any comments, hints, suggestions, cautions, or warning that you can give me would be appreciated.)

I plan on installing a 7/8 inch tom mount to the side of my main drum. I realize this involves drilling 3 screw holes and one 7/8 inch hole in my drum shell but hey, nothing lasts for ever, not even a pristeen cocktail drum.

I bought a 12"x10" CB tom and an adjustable 7/8 inch mounting rod so I could angle the tom slightly toward me, rather than having the tom head in the same plane as the top head of the main drum. (That's the way the stock Yamaha tom mounts and I don't want it that way.)

Only problem is that the adjustable part of the mounting rod puts the tom about 8 inches away from the main drum and I want them close together. Not to mention the fact that, even with the high hat cymbals on the opposite side for balance, the tom is heavy enough and far enough away that I'm afraid it will make the set a bit tippy. Here's my solution: I'm going to salvage a 10 inch piece of chromed tubing from the adjustable mounting assembly and take it to my friendly local machine shop. I want them to put a 15 degree bend in the rod so I can mount the tom as close as possible to the main drum. They should be only about 3 1/2 inches apart this way. (I made a test setup using a pillow to prop up the tom at the angle I want it and then I carefully measured the angle.)

Anybody see any problems with this approach?
I have also been trying to figure out how to mount side drums so that you can get full angle capabilities. Below is a picture of a cocktail kit with Pearl-type mounts (assuming I've coded this correctly). If you look at the flexibility, you'll see that you should be able to get the small drums real close to the main drum without any modifications to the mount tubes. I personally hate the idea of drilling big holes into the drums, but I don't know of any other mounts that would work to offer both side-to-side and front-to-back tilting. Anyone have any other ideas??? What other mounts would offer this flexibility???
Just wanted to send a big THANKS out to FunkyWilly and John Mettam for the info on mounting a tom. That picture of the cocktail drum with the two toms on it inspired me to finally drill some holes and mount my own tom. I used the ball-type mounting rod and 7/8 inch mounting clamp (by Gibraltar?). I can put the tom exactly where I want it. My set is not tippy at all and it feels so good to have a tom to do fills on.

Someday when I figure out how, I'm going to post a photo of my set but for now, just picture a silver sparkle Yamaha Club Jordan with a candy-apple red tom hanging off the side. Nifty!
