I'll see if this link works. It is from a Percussive Arts Society Newsletter about perfection drums. Shows the bass drum as a nesting drum with a hinge so everything could be stored inside the bass drum. This is from pre world war 1

Thanks for the link.
Interesting ... but I'd be too worried about scratching the inside of my kick drum shell (or damaging the heads) to make it worth the convenience.

You could wrap the snare in a small blanket and wouldn't have to worry about damage to either drum.
