Crazy Snare Build Fun

I haven't been here in a long time, let's just say I've been busy hammering away live on cocktail kits.
After fighting with snare mechanisms and easy fix snare ideas I finally broke down and modified my custom cocktail kit. I added an internal snare shell inside the main body of the Kick/Snare drum. I had planned this many years ago but just never had the resources near enough when I had time. I hooked up with local snare builder Kyle of http://www.killersnares.com (which I proudly endorse) and we made it all happen.
A 6 ply 13" maple shell. 45 degree bearing edge on resonant side. Puresound 20 strand strainer. A snare throw off, snare rim, lugs and rods is all you'll need. Oh and a drill, some bolts, nuts and wrenches.
The shell is just lower than the main 16" drum (in my case) bearing edge. The sound pressure from the big skin resonates the 13" shell and strainer. The snare can now be turned off and on. Sounds like a giant snare but without any harsh snap of a 13" snare. Well rounded and cuts live like any other snare. Perfect for own brand of show and music.
The head nor any sticking ever comes in contact with the 13" top edges.

Really clever! I've know about drums, especially snare drums, resonating with other drums but this is a very creative way of addressing one of the biggest bugaboos or cocktail drums! Superb thinking.

Hi guys, been awhile since I was here. The S.S.#1 cocktail drum worked very well for our application. A major issue that did arise was when the kick on the underside was played. I used this shell mostly as visual, only the snare side was played however when played as a kick and snare there was much snare resonance. Had I been using this as both kick and snare I would have had to baffle and I would have also ported the shell. The porting both to open the snare sound more and allow both kick and snare to breath. It was great fun playing this set up but it has since been decommissioned for the new album cycle. There's only live footage of this drum in action, no other recorded sources done.

Meet the new S.S.#2 (Steam Ship). Yes, it's played standing up and yes both kicks do get utilized.
