could this work? (16x20 cocktail bass drum)

Post by ricky »

Has anyone ever tried using a 16x20 or larger size bass drum for a cocktail type drum? The kick could be held up with 4floor tom legs or 2 extra bass legs with spurs{4 all together]. I dont have any drums to try this out on yet,I think the main concern would be if the reverse pedal would reach or if the bass would be played better sitting down...and so on,if anyone is interested in at least trying this out without choppshopping the kick, let me know. dont kill your kick on my account! thanks for your time.

Hey Ricky,

Well, you have a great idea..... they've been doing it since the 50's! Slingerland and I believe Ludwig made 'convertible' bass drums. Use it as a normal bass drum OR raise it up on legs with a cocktail pedal and use the other head as a massive timpani/floor tom:

Check out the Look and Learn sections of the website!

Do you guys remember in the 70's Alice Cooper's drummer played a gigantic double bass drum set with bass drums mounted parallel to the floor and cocktail-style bass drum pedals?
