I don't know if Remo is making these anymore or not. Anybody know?

They are made of a synthetic shell (I believe like their Djembes) some sort of fiberboard/epoxy composite.

There is a reverse kick underneath and a conga/djembe head on top. There is no snare mechanism at all. I played one once at a music shop and have to say that I was not so impressed. I suppose the bass could be tweaked to get more umph but the height was odd for playing the top head with hands and I didn't think the sound was so interesting without the snare.

Just my 2 cents. If you can get one cheap it might be fun and you coud possibly rig up a snare to it!
Well, I did pick one up cheap. After fooling with it some I don't think it's ideal for a cocktail setup. I may remove the pedal and bottom head and use it as a hand drum.

Remo Coffee House drum

TNO - What did you like/dislike about it? I've considered one as well for my acoustic group. Currently I use a djembe/congas. Where/how mcuh did you get one "cheap", if you don't mind me asking..

Thanks.

Just so everyone is clear what we are talking about:

Sometime I believe around 2000 Remo introduced the Coffee House Drum which was basically a cocktail style drum with an upward striking pedal but the top head was a Remo synthetic Conga head. There is no snare mechanism on these drums. The shells are made of a paper fiber/resin shell similar to their other ethnic percussion instruments.

They later came out with the Trilok Gurtu Kick Conga which has a larger kick head and is a short height sit down drum:

I believe that both of these are out of production. There are still some Coffee House drums floating around but it is rare to see the Kick Conga. I have played both of these in music shops and was not overly impressed with either of them.

Hope that's helpful!
