3 or 4 legs?

Any opinions on which is better or even which looks cooler?

I use 4. Keeps the drum more stable if you have lots of stuff hung off it. I had trouble balancing mine. If you can evenly distribute the weight of the snare, cymbals, etc. then 3 works.

Our first kits I build back in the mid 90's had three legs, way too unstable - 10.5mm legs with pull ring brackets is the only way to go for stability. Especially if your going to be running side drums and bigger cymbals... IMHO

Billy Blast drums makes a Bass Pedal Slideing Rail system that becomes your 4th leg and gives the pedal something solid to grip. Look how he builds his cocktail sets.
